Backyard Barley

I grew 25 square feet of barley in a city back yard.

When it turned golden, the heads drooped, and I was able to barely dent the kernels with a fingernail, the barley was ready to harvest. I cut it, dried it in sheaves, threshed it (put small batches at a time in a pillow case and beat that against the ground to dislodge the grain from the stalk), and winnowed it (poured it slowly in front of a fan to blow away the chaff while allowing the grain to fall into a container, repeating until it was well-separated).

To be continued in the barley malting experiments
